Cole & Son - Unlock an interior’s potential: wallpaper elegance

Why use wallpaper in a contract setting?

Martyn Lawrence Bullard: Wallpaper is the most exciting way to add pizzazz to any space. It's powerful and can immediately make a statement. Wallpaper is the easiest way to grab attention. In commercial spaces, it is an unrivalled way to make brand statements through design. Cole & Son has the most amazing range of power-punching papers, in a scale and colour kaleidoscope that fits every design scheme.

How does one go about choosing a scheme or design for a contract space?

I believe you should always start with the space, be it a restaurant, bar or hotel. Next, you need to let the architecture and period of the space guide the design inspiration. Take into account the lighting, spatial plan, height and scale of the property, then pick your papers to maximise atmosphere. The larger the space, the bolder you can be with your wallpaper choices.

What drew you to working with Cole & Son?

Cole & Son has long been my favourite wallpaper purveyor: its quality, colour combinations and amazing array of patterns is unsurpassed. I have always been drawn to its historic references and fearless design attitude. There was an immediate attraction for me and my design aesthetic. It could not have been a more perfect partnership for me. I am honoured to join its prestigious list of designers, and work with the incredible creative team.

How can the collection's stylistic elements be translated to a contract environment?

I think the designs within this collection are very versatile and have many different uses. One of the papers, Bazaar, is a metallic tile motif, which is perfect for adding to a ceiling for a dramatic effect. Meanwhile, Royal Fernery (pictured) is a modern take on a French botanical archive piece.

Wallpaper is a creative tool, and this collection is really versatile; for example, borders can create architecture where there is none, while fantastical palatial doorways can be used to trick the eye or frame a wall. This collection was designed with residential and contract uses in mind, so the interior designer can really fulfil their vision.

How do the collection's colour palettes enhance a commercial space?

The colours are all very fresh and inspired by the past, but made vibrant for today's environments. We designed palettes that have many hues that can be extracted to create a scheme, to paint furniture or trim panelling to match, highlight or balance. I love soft and bold colours, but always with a little patina - as something extra -that really helps to create ambiance. The hand-painted, fine quality of the papers has a wonderful depth and will add so much to the finished look.

What tip should every business owner keep in mind when designing their interior?

Remember that your choice will become a hallmark for your brand. It signifies the look, quality, feeling and energy that you want to exude from your business. Wallpaper makes a powerful statement and is one of the least expensive ways to really 'get bang for your buck'. It makes you stand out from the crowd, and in today's competitive world, that's the key to win.
