UK-BASED DESIGNERS CREATE GLOBAL DESIGN BLUEPRINT FOR SUMOSAN, WITH FIRST OPENING IN DOHA

12 January 2022

Award-winning creative studio DesignLSM has completed the design of Sumosan Doha – a premium Japanese restaurant in Qatar - creating a dining experience for both locals and visitors, and setting a global design narrative which will provide a blueprint for future restaurants for this internationally-acclaimed brand.

With existing restaurants in London, Moscow, Dubai, Courchevel, Montenegro and Berlin, signature design elements have been introduced by DesignLSM, including lighting installations, ceramic art and bespoke furniture.

Working in collaboration with UK manufacturer Parla, an exclusive dining chair design was created for Sumosan - a luxurious, comfortable seat supported by a curved frame featuring elegant joinery and soft pink hued leather.

Ribbed banquette seating in a rich moss velvet was also produced alongside a custom-designed table, featuring a brass cuff detail to the edging as well as tailor made waiter stations. Subtle and elegant design details echo throughout the specialised furniture items reflecting the craftsmanship displayed in the kitchen and on the plate.

DesignLSM also commissioned striking art installations to compliment the design, including intricate handmade ceramics by London-based Japanese artist Ikuko Iwamoto, which have been strategically displayed throughout the restaurant, lit like illuminated jewels, whilst a tubular undulating sculpture occupying the ceiling is made of brass and metal and is intelligently lit to create a dramatic impact for guests.

Creating an entrance feature, the guests are welcomed at the meet and great which is carved from a monolithic piece of stone and framed by a beautiful bespoke chandelier and tall, thin wooden screens that house jewel like emerald velvet panels – with the intent of building the guests’ anticipation and intrigue to the restaurant space within.

The core material palate of the space has been kept natural and minimal – illustrating the beauty found within the stones, the intricacy of the veining in the marble and lustre of the timber

Located in Msheireb in downtown Doha, Qatar, the new centre of Doha, the restaurant is situated within a new development considered to be the largest covered plaza in the world and as such also benefits from having a large external terrace adorned with lush planting.

DesignLSM lead designer Tom Munson commented: ““The inspiration from the design was influenced by the art and precision taken when producing the famed Sumosan sushi, as well as the craft and materiality of Japanese joinery.

“The new Sumosan narrative reflects a natural, sophisticated and contemporary style, with the open kitchen forming the heart of the space – ensuring that the mastery of the chefs and the exquisite Japanese cuisine are the true stars of the show.

He added: “When building the Sumosan design DNA, it was important to us to harmonise the brand’s cultural roots as well as introducing an international flavor to honor its global presence, as well as their well-travelled clientele.”
