Europe’s finest – the 2014 European Hospitality Awards

Now in its fifth year, Hotel Management International’s European Hospitality Awards has firmly established itself as one of the leading annual celebrations of the industry’s achievements. Judges this year include EHMA president Hans Koch; Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels’ global CEO, Mark Wynne-Smith; citizenM CEO Michael Levie; Ted Teng; CEO of Leading Hotels of the World; and Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne president André Witschi.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Sir Rocco Forte

Most hoteliers are content with developing one international hotel group in a lifetime, but Sir Rocco has performed this rarest of tricks twice. Born into the industry, he joined Forte plc in 1969, becoming CEO in 1983 and chairman in 1992, succeeding his father, who founded the company in 1934. As chairman, Sir Rocco significantly expanded overseas operations, acquiring Meridien Hotel Group and transforming Forte from a predominantly UK operation to a global entity that included iconic properties such as George V, Sandy Lane, Madrid's Hotel Ritz and Hôtel Plaza Athénée in New York.

The group was sold in 1996 following a hostile take-over. In the same year Sir Rocco Forte Hotels was born and it has since developed into a collection of 11 landmark luxury properties spread across six European countries.

Sir Rocco was knighted in December 1994 for services to the UK tourism industry and received the highest Italian accolade, the Gran Croce dell'Ordine al Merito della Republicca Italiana, for his entrepreneurial merits and strong links with Italy in March 2005. From 1991-1996, he was president of the British Hospitality Association and has also been an active member of the Executive Committee of the World Travel & Tourism Council.
